Jorge Luis Borges (Biography)

Jorge Francisco Isidoro Luis Borges Acevedo (Buenos Aires, August 24, 1899-Geneva, June 14, 1986) was an Argentine story writer, essayist, poet and translator, and a key figure for both Spanish-speaking literature and for Universal literature.

Having been born in a suburb of Buenos Aires, Borges moved to Switzerland with his family in 1914, where he studied at the Collège de Genève. The family would travel extensively in Europe, including Spain. After his return to Argentina in 1921, Borges began publishing his poems and essays in surrealist literary magazines; He also worked as a librarian, teacher and lecturer.

In 1955 he was appointed director of the National Library of the Argentine Republic and professor of English literature at the University of Buenos Aires. At the age of 55 he was completely blind: numerous researchers have suggested that his progressive blindness motivated him to create innovative literary symbols through imagination

Borges had two close friends for most of his life: writers Adolfo Bioy Casares and Manuel Peyrou. Bioy Casares met him at the home of his friend Victoria Ocampo, Peyrou was introduced to a German bar on Corrientes Street near Pueyrredón in the 1920s. The relationship of friendship with each of them was profoundly different. .

Awarded with numerous distinctions, he was also controversial for his conservative political positions: his importance continues to be a cause for debate, particularly for the possibility that they have prevented him from obtaining the Nobel Prize for Literature, to which he was a candidate for almost thirty years

In 1986, knowing that he was ill with cancer and fearing that his agony was a national spectacle, he established his residence in Geneva, a city to which he was joined by a deep love and to which Borges had designated one of my homelands. On April 26, he married – by proxy – with María Kodama, according to the Act of that date worked in Colonia Rojas Silva, Paraguay. He died on June 14, 1986 at the age of 86, victim of liver cancer and pulmonary emphysema.

Borges was, is and will be one of the greatest personalities recognized in Argentina, and who have also passed through La Biela.
